Kids Helping Haiti

Hi:) Pictures of the destruction and hardship in Haiti have been everywhere recently. Whenever tragedies such as this one occur, as parents, we have to decide how much information is too much when it comes to our children. For young kids, images of the suffering would obviously be too disturbing, but for older kids, the ability to get an up close look at what is actually happening in another part of the world presents an opportunity for them to develop an understanding of our common plight as human beings and feel compassion for what others are going through. Not only that, but it also presents an opportunity for us to teach kids that we don't have to just stand by and watch the suffering of our fellow man with detached pity, but that we can do something, no matter how small, to help.

I have seen some great stories on TV and around the web of kids getting involved in fundraising efforts on behalf of Haiti. These stories are inspiring to me, and I realize that there are many ways that we can get involved and help. As the efforts to rebuild Haiti continue, I am sure they will need continued support. Joanne Fritz, About.com's Guide to Nonprofits, has a quick rundown of how to donate to help Haiti, and it's really easy to send a text or get online to send money. We may not have a lot to give, but every little bit helps.
